Good Evening CMHS Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,
I recently had the opportunity to connect with our wonderful Trustee Nancy Close. She continues to be a strong supporter of everything we do at Central Memorial High School, from our outstanding PVA programs, to advocating for enhanced Career Skills and Trades opportunities, to championing academics and athletics. We are grateful for her ongoing commitment to our students and school community.
As Trustee Close is a big hockey fan, our conversation naturally turned to the start of the playoffs. Many people are surprised to learn that I am a Montreal Canadiens fan, especially since most know I also love the Calgary Flames. I shared a childhood story with Trustee Close about growing up cheering for Montreal (until Calgary got its own NHL team). My uncle was once drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs (a very long time ago), but he chose to stay home and work at the Calgary Brewery instead (he would make more money ... imagine). One Saturday night watching hockey on TV, my dad, a loyal Leafs fan, once asked me, “Why on earth do you like Montreal?” I answered, “Dad… they are the Canadian team!” That story was retold many times over the years. Even as a little kid, I was proudly “Canadian” right from day one.
Stories like these remind us that sports are about much more than wins and losses. They create connection, identity, belonging, and community. Every conversation has the power to lift someone up, spark connection, and create belonging. As adults and educators, one of our most important roles is to inspire students to lead with kindness, respect, and empathy.
Sports can also be a bridge for meaningful conversations about equity and inclusion. They allow us to discuss fairness, ethics, teamwork, and social responsibility, not just goals and scores. They bring people together across cultures and experiences. Whether through the teams students support, international sporting competitions, or local school athletics, sports can open dialogue about identity, inclusion, and our responsibility as allies in our schools and communities. Sports are not just games; they are powerful teaching tools.
I have greatly enjoyed watching our Central Memorial High School athletes compete over the past few weeks. Their dedication, resilience, and school pride are inspiring. It has also been a pleasure meeting many of the four-legged family members cheering from the sidelines as well. They may be some of our most enthusiastic supporters!
I was also fortunate to attend our school’s spring production of Peter and the Starcatcher. As always, I was in awe of the tremendous talent of our students and the exceptionally high level of performance. It is always a treat to attend. The subtle one-liners woven throughout the production brought laughter to those quick enough to catch them, a true testament to the wit and skill of our performers and production team.
Thank you for your continued support of Central Memorial High School. Together, through academics, arts, athletics, and everyday acts of kindness, we continue to build a school community where students can thrive.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Anne Kromm Principal
